Allergies, Sensitivities and Autism
In their search for answers, many parents of children on the autism spectrum turn to complementary medicine to reduce their child’s symptoms. One such therapy is called NAET (Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Technique). It’s based on the theory that we are surrounded by all kinds of chemicals, additives, and toxins in our environment or foods. In many cases, allergies and sensitivities to those substances are the underlying triggers that actually worsen a child’s symptoms.
Beyond the symptoms associated with autism, allergies and sensitivities can cause a wide variety of health issues. Many respiratory and digestive problems are related to allergies. Less obvious symptoms include, muscle and joint pains, mood and behavioral issues, and skin problems . NAET is a therapy that targets those allergies as a way to alleviate associated symptoms.
NAET combines principles from Western science, kinesiology, acupuncture and Oriental medicine, chiropractic, and nutrition. It’s based on determining what substances are triggering symptoms. The practitioner then treats the patient to relieve sensitivities, one allergen at a time. This is done through a combination of muscle testing and acupressure. If the patient is willing, acupuncture may also be used. It’s important to note however, that NAET can be done with acupressure only. This means that in treating children, needles would not be used. NAET can be performed on patients of any age. However in treating children with autism, it’s most effective on children below the age of ten.
